Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program Receives the 2007 Wainwright Bank Social Justice Award
BOSTON, MA, November 6, 2007 - Wainwright Bank (NASDAQ: “WAIN”) last night awarded its 19th annual Wainwright Bank Social Justice Award to Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program (BHCHP) and its President, Dr. Jim O’Connell.
For 20 years, BHCHP has provided health care to more than 9,000 homeless men, women and children annually. With clinics in three Boston hospitals and over 70 community sites, teams of doctors and other clinicians offer comprehensive care in places familiar to homeless persons, including shelters and soup kitchens, on the streets and at the McInnis House, a 90-bed respite care facility for ill and injured homeless persons who would otherwise require prolonged and costly hospitalizations.
“For Dr. Jim O’Connell and Boston Health Care for the Homeless, health care is an issue of social justice, not charity; it is a right, not a privilege,” said Robert Glassman, Co-founder and Co-chairman of Wainwright Bank upon presenting the award.
Wainwright Bank created the Social Justice Award to recognize nonprofits and affiliated individuals who have achieved outstanding success in addressing issues of social justice. The Award is accompanied by a $10,000 donation and was presented during the Bank's annual customer appreciation event attended by over 500 people at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel.
With $900 million in assets, Boston-based Wainwright Bank is widely recognized as one of the most progressive community banks in the country. It has provided over $600 million in loan commitments for socially responsible development projects including affordable housing, environmental protection, HIV/AIDS services, homeless shelters, immigration services and more. The Bank was named the “ultimate high-purpose company” in the recently published book “The High-Purpose Company: The Truly Responsible (and Highly Profitable) Firms That Are Changing Business Now” by Christine Arena.
