Wainwright Bank Co-founder Named 2007 Community Banker of the Year
BOSTON, MA, November 30, 2007 - Wainwright Bank & Trust Company (NASDAQ: WAIN) Co-founder and Co-chairman, Robert A. Glassman, was named Community Banker of the Year: The Advocate at the Seventh Annual Banker of the Year Awards dinner last night at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, presented by the editors of American Banker.
Each year, American Banker honors leaders in the banking industry for their achievements and for the accomplishments of the institutions they lead.
"Wainwright Bank is a powerful example of a bank that does well by doing good," said David Longobardi, editor in chief of American Banker. "It epitomizes how a banking company can operate in support of a set of social or political principles, while also remaining profitable."
Since the inaugural Banker of the Year Awards dinner and ceremony in 2001, the gala has become the industry's premier event, attracting a "who's who" of lawmakers, regulators and leading executives.
“We have received many honors through the years but rarely do those accolades come from the mainstream business press. Tonight I will be accepting this award on behalf of all our stakeholders -- employees, shareholders and customers -- who make it all possible, and for that we are profoundly grateful. I was once referred to as a social activist disguised as a banker; I guess tonight’s’ honor is proof that it is working,” said Bob Glassman upon receiving the award.
Founded in 1987, Wainwright Bank is a leading socially progressive bank headquartered in Boston with assets of $900 million and 11 branches serving neighborhoods throughout Greater Boston. Over 50 percent of the Bank’s commercial lending portfolio is committed to community development initiatives including affordable housing, homeless shelters, HIV/AIDS services, community health centers, and environmental issues to name a few. Wainwright’s support of social justice issues has been widely recognized including being named one of the 11 Best Lenders to Women in the U.S., one of the Top 10 Best “Green” Banking Firms nationwide and one of the Top 20 Sustainable Stocks in the world.
