Wainwright Bank Named to Top 100 Companies for Gays and Lesbians

Boston, MA, October 15, 1998 - Wainwright Bank has been selected as one of the most progressive companies nationwide for gay and lesbian consumers, employees, and investors by the 1998 GLV 100 Index Survey.

The GLV 100 is issued each year by Howard Tharsing, President of V-Management in San Francisco, and Grant Lukenbill, author of Smart Spending for Gay and Lesbian Consumers. Compiled from written survey data, confidential employee reports and certain published sources, the GLV 100 is used by institutional investors, human rights activists, and corporate watchdog groups as a leading barometer of America's best corporate citizens.

Wainwright Bank has long been recognized for its commitment to gay and lesbian issues. In 1994, Wainwright released the Community Card MasterCard® which creates funding for Boston area nonprofits supporting gay and lesbian equality, women's rights and AIDS services. That same year, the Massachusetts Bankers Association Group Health Insurance made same-sex domestic partner benefits available to all 154 member banks and their 10,000 employees, publicly citing Wainwright's lobbying efforts as a major catalyst.

In 1996, bank director Brenda Cole testified before Congress in support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) which if passed, would guarantee equal opportunity in the workplace for gays and lesbians.

This year, Wainwright became one of the first Boston-area corporations to endorse the Equality Principles of the Alliance for Corporate Equality (ACE) which guarantees equal treatment for all employees regardless of their sexual orientation.

In addition, Wainwright supports many local organizations including Gay and Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), Boston Area Gay and Lesbian Youth (BAGLY), the Boston Pride Committee, the Greater Boston Business Council, the Lesbian and Gay Political Alliance of Massachusetts, and the Human Rights Campaign.
